What is Stress, Anyway?

You may feel like that question isn’t even necessary–and perhaps you’re right. With our clients, we’ve found it can be helpful to take a step back and take a deeper look at how stress can show up in our lives.

When stress shows up, that means we’re in overdrive.

Here are some ways stress might manifest in our lives…

  • Insomnia or broken sleep

  • Racing thoughts

  • Grinding teeth or clenching the jaw

  • Tension in muscles

  • Headaches and brain fog

  • Suppressed appetite and/or digestive concerns

Stress is often caused by external situations. These occur at work, in our relationships, and in other pressures of everyday life. It can also be triggered by trauma experienced both individually and collectively. When overwhelmed with whatever situation we’re facing, we can also become irritable, anxious, depressed, etc.

Anxiety, depression, and stress are closely related. It's not surprising if you're experiencing two or more of these things at the same time.

  • Stress is often caused by external events that trigger internal negative beliefs, past traumas, and fears.

It is also an experience that we often brush off as normal or simply a part of life. And while stress can serve a role as a motivator to do what we need to do, when it begins to be a consistent presence in our lives, it’s time to consider some stress management strategies. Treating symptoms of stress can take intentionality, especially if the triggers behind the stress are something you can’t necessarily remove, like the pressure of work deadlines or feeling the weight of a big and necessary life decision. That being said, there are many ways you can nourish your mind and body in the midst of stress—here are some of our go-to’s:

    • Mindfulness exercises like a body scan or boxed breathing

    • Yoga or other exercises that allows you to get out of your head

    • A walk with a friend or furry friend

    • Breaking up tasks into more manageable portions

  • Stress is something we all experience at one time or another. It’s important to find strategies that work for you and your specific situation. But, when stress is not addressed, it can move from being more manageable to a state of chronic stress.

The truth is, it’s never too early to seek out support for stress. Read on to see what to look for when beginning your search for a stress management therapist in Los Angeles.

  • When looking for a therapist to support you in managing your stress, it’s important to find the right fit for you.

Though it may take some time, ideally you should be able to develop a supportive and genuine relationship with your holistic therapist and feel both safe and accepted by them.

We know this may feel like a daunting task, to find a therapist that feels like a fit for both your goals and your budget, so we’ve created a round-up of essential questions to ask when interviewing a new therapist.

Our Approach to Stress Management Therapy:

As holistic therapists, we work to find how stress connects to the unconscious parts of ourselves. This is so the external events that trigger stress throughout our day don’t have so much power.

At Highland Park Holistic Therapy, we understand that every individual will handle stress differently. And because we are a holistic therapy practice in Los Angeles, we believe it’s important to consider the impact stress may be having on your mind, body, and soul.

Our team of holistic therapists in Los Angeles are here to help. They can provide you support in processing what is happening in your life. They also collaborate to help you to figure out strategies and tools that will help you manage stress.

You deserve to thrive, not simply survive or “get through.”
