Group Therapy in Los Angeles, CA

healing happens in relationship.

At Highland Park Holistic Psychotherapy, we believe that connection and meaningful relationships are significant for mental wellness. Group therapy is a modality of therapeutic support that harnesses this idea and supports clients who share a common goal.

Group therapy can be a wonderful way to get support. It works for individuals who are already working with an individual therapist, or those who haven’t yet participated in individual therapy. Even for individuals who feel that long-term support is out of their budget at the moment.

Personal healing work, such as working with a therapist, is enhanced by the work alongside other people.

Community and connection can be powerful catalysts for meaningful change, healing, and growth.

FAQ: What Is Group Therapy?

Group therapy is therapeutic support offered in a group format that is led by a licensed therapist.

There are several different types of therapeutic groups. These groups include support groups, process groups, and psychoeducational groups.

Support Groups are often centered around a specific life experience or demographic. For example, a grief support group or a support group for individuals who experienced a recent natural disaster in their area.

Process Groups are a little bit different. This is because the group is focused on what is happening in the present moment within the group. It helps take a closer look at interpersonal dynamics. This helps individuals receive feedback and strengthen their interpersonal relationship skills.

Psychoeducational Groups are the most structured type of group. Often these groups will follow a plan or curriculum that is focused on a specific skill or educational goal. For example, a mindfulness group or DBT skills group.

Groups can vary in size but at our practice, we believe small group sizes are best. Often including five to seven group members.

How Group Therapy Can Support the Healing Process:

Connection:

Being connected with others in their process can remind you that you’re not alone.

Consistency:

Having a dedicated space and time for support. This helps to process and create a sense of containment.

Corrective Experiences:

Giving and receiving feedback and support. These can help us to understand ourselves and how we are perceived by others in relationships.
