An Anxiety Therapist Shares the Most Commonly Overlooked Symptoms of Anxiety

Our therapists in Los Angeles are experienced in supporting clients who are experiencing anxiety—whether it be occurring consistently or happening on a more situational basis. In fact, many clients come to therapy because of how anxiety is impacting their life in some way or another.

It’s important to consider that every individual will be uniquely impacted by anxiety, however, there are several common symptoms that signal anxiety is present…

  2. Go-to coping tools are no longer effective

  3. Hyperfixation or rumination is impacting work or relationships

  4. There’s an urgency for things to happen quickly

  5. Having hopeless or helpless feelings

  6. Dissociation—or a general feeling of being numb and detached

  7. Unexplained aches, pains, or headaches

Strategies for Managing These More Subtle Symptoms of Anxiety

In a recent blog, we shared how to use specific grounding techniques to manage the experience of anxiety—you can read the full post right here. In addition to those techniques, here are several coping strategies that may be worth integrating into your mental health toolkit:

  • Slow down for sustainable and meaningful self-care. This doesn’t necessarily mean splurging on a massage or something that costs money, although it could. Self-care can be a short (and free!) practice. It could be making time for a 10-minute walk or taking a break from work to eat a full meal without distractions. Every individual’s definition of what is restorative self-care will be different—so explore what this looks like for you.

  • Challenge the inner-critic or monologue that is harsh and critical. Begin by noticing when your thoughts or self-talk start to be unkind, hurried, or scattered.

  • Work with a therapist. It’s important to not only address the physical symptoms of anxiety but also to process the underlying factors that may be triggering the anxiety.

  • In some cases, it may be worth exploring with your doctor and psychotherapist if anxiety medication is right for you. As holistic therapists in Los Angeles, we understand that medication is not for everyone, and should be integrated thoughtfully. In some cases, medication can be an important part of an individual’s healing process.
